John Morton Hammond, a dedicated law enforcement officer, beloved husband, father, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully at his home in Morton Grove, Illinois on Thursday, April 4, at the age of 82. Born in Chicago on May 18, 1941, to Sydney (Morton) Hammond and John Bancroft Hammond, he arrived just minutes after his twin sister Emily Herndon. John is survived by his loving wife, Laura (Hillyard), their children, Tawny Lynn Hammond (Amy Clayton), John Scott Hammond, and Jill Hammond Ross, grandchildren Andrew Hammond Ross, Samantha Laura Ross, and sister Emily Herndon (John), brother Gordon Hammond (Shirley). He was preceded in death by his eldest brother Charles Bancroft Hammond (Jeannette). John's commitment to serving and protecting others spanned over five decades, beginning with his tenure at the Skokie Police Department from 1965 to 1997, followed by his service with the Cook County Sheriff’s department from 1997 to 2019. Settling in Morton Grove, Illinois, John embarked on a lifelong journey with his beloved wife of 63 years, Laura Hammond. Their love story began on a blind date in 1960, culminating in marriage on December 9 of that year. Together, they nurtured a family, raising their children, Tawny, Scott, and Jill, with boundless love and unwavering dedication. Community service was ingrained in John's spirit, as evidenced by his active involvement in various Masonic organizations, including the Free Masons - Chicago Lodge 437, the Scottish Rite Order of Masonry, the Ancient Order of Egyptian Sciots Pyramid 1 of Illinois, and the Chicago Medinah Shriners. He held leadership positions, contributing his time and efforts to bettering the lives of others. John's devotion to family was unparalleled. Annual vacations were cherished moments spent with Laura's family in Kentucky and later with his adult children wherever life took them. His greatest joy was having his family close, surrounded by love and laughter. In honor of John's memory, contributions may be made to: Skokie Police Department Benevolent Fund, Shriners Hospital for Children, Best Friends Animal Society. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, from 12 noon to 1:30 pm at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, IL, followed by a Bahai graveside service at Memorial Park. John Morton Hammond will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his legacy of love, service, and devotion will forever endure in the hearts of those he touched.
