Fernando Cruz.jpg

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Fernando 'Fernan' S. Cruz, a loving husband, devoted father, and a dedicated public servant. Fernan was born on March 16, 1944, in Manila, Philippines, and peacefully departed this world on October 5, 2023, in Chicago, Illinois. He was 79 years old. Fernan was the beloved husband of Adelaida N. Cruz, nee Del Castillo, and the cherished father of Frances Cruz and her husband Joseph Herbas. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he dedicated his life to their happiness and well-being. Fernan was a proud Filipino, and his commitment to service was evident through his distinguished career in law enforcement. He served with honor and dedication as a police officer, first with the Manila Police Department and later with the Chicago Police Department. Throughout his years in uniform, he selflessly worked to protect and serve his community, making it a safer place for all. One of the proudest moments in Fernan's career was his service on the security detail for the legendary Muhammad Ali during "The Thrilla In Manila" in 1975. He took immense pride in safeguarding the boxing icon during this historic event, and it remained a cherished memory throughout his life. Beyond his dedication to law enforcement, Fernan had a deep passion for music, particularly karaoke, where he would enthusiastically share his melodious voice with family and friends. He also had a love for sports, especially boxing and martial arts, which reflected his discipline and determination. Fernan's legacy of service, love, and dedication will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us remember him for his unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
