Carmen is the mother of Chris Matias CPD.

Carmen Matias.jpg

Carmen Raquel Matias passed away the night of April 16th at age 76. She was born in 1947 in Añasco, Puerto Rico as the daughter of Georgina and Juan Echevarrìa. She was the third eldest, and eldest girl of her five siblings, Luis Noel, Luis Israel, and Edwardo Echeverria, and Beridis E Torres. She came to Chicago in 1965 and worked as a film inspector, both inspecting and shipping movies to theatres. Carmen had four children, Chris, Robert, Lillian, and Lisa Matias and was a mother-in-law to Roxanne Bustamante, Orlando Garcia, and Glen Diaz. She had four grandchildren, Michael, Emy, Elaina, and Isabel Matias, one great-granddaughter, Arabella Matias, and was a loving aunt to wonderful nieces and nephews. Beyond the love she had for her family, Carmen valued her community and church greatly. She was the block leader of 1500 N Washtenaw in the 80s and 90s, volunteered with the public schools, and was a Sunday school teacher. She loved dancing to salsa music and enjoying the weather outside, as she was often found sitting in her chair on her front porch during the warm months. A hospitable woman, she would always assure that a visit to her house meant leaving with a stomach full of Puerto Rican food and to-go boxes for the following days. Carmen was a selfless and charitable woman who believed in helping those in need and was seen as a mother to all. Visitation for Carmen will be held on Thursday, April 20th, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Casey & Rios Funeral Home 4540 West Diversey Avenue, Chicago, IL 60639 with Funeral Services being held on Friday, April 21st, 10:30 AM at Casey & Rios Funeral Home. Interment Acacia Park Cemetery. For funeral information please call 773-777-6300 or www.caseyandriosfh.com.
