Robert R. Egan.jpg

Robert R. Egan passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023, at age 74, from complications from pneumonia after a recent cancer diagnosis. By the time he was thirty, Bob had risen to be one of the top criminal prosecutors in Cook County. Early in his stellar career, he was the Assistant State’s Attorney supervising the removal of bodies from John Wayne Gacy’s house. He would go on to prosecute Gacy and to witness his execution. Over the next thirty years, Bob worked as a lead prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Office, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and in private practice as a Criminal Defense Attorney. During his career, he would try more than eighty murder cases, fifty of which were jury trials. Bob went on to assume management roles within the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the State’s Attorney’s Office, while still returning to the courtroom when a high profile case called. When a bus driver for the Dave Mathews Band dumped 800 pounds of sewage through the Kinzie Street Bridge grate, into the Chicago river - and onto passengers on the Architectural Tour boat passing underneath - it was Bob who supervised the prosecution. Bob’s courtroom experience, command of criminal forensics, and his keen ability to spin an often gory yarn made him a prized dinner guest - though he often had to be told to spare the details until after dessert. Criminal Justice was a profession Bob was born to. His father, Edward Egan, was a Chicago Police Officer and Commander and his older brother, Donald Egan, was a founding partner of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP. Bob is also preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Gallagher Egan and brother Edward (Eddie) Egan. Bob grew up on Chicago’s South Side and attended Brother Rice High School. He then went on to pursue his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. at the Notre Dame Law School. Bob ultimately derived his greatest professional satisfaction mentoring young attorneys and teaching trial advocacy and criminal justice. He also loved scuba diving, flying, photography, cooking and reading histories and mysteries. But his greatest passion was his family. He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Tracy Griffith Egan, daughters Fiona and Lucy, sister-in-law, Emilie Chaddock Egan, his beloved nieces and nephew, Jennifer, Christina, Matthew and Alexandra, and cats Sherlock (Bob’s Bruh) and Agatha Jane.
