Richard J. “Sparky” Holdefer, 91, of Blue Island, passed from this life Thursday, March 30, 2023. Richard was born February 29, 1932 in Blue Island to the late Amanda nee Kreinbrink and the late Arthur Holdefer. Richard is the beloved husband of Norma D. nee Slater. The couple were united in marriage on October 16, 1954. He is the loving father of Steven (Mary) Holdefer, Jeff Holdefer and the late Kevin Holdefer. Richard is the proud grandfather of Jennifer, Stevyn, Kevyn and Kenyth. He was the dear brother of the late Marian (late Richard) Luety. Richard leaves other family members and friends to cherish his memory. Richard was a United States Army veteran serving in the Korean War. He dedicated many years of his life to the Blue Island community as a firefighter. Sparky began his career in 1958, being promoted to Fire Chief in 1976 and serving until his retirement in 1985. Sparky spent his years living in Blue Island and also in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Although his career was in the Fire Service, he wore many other hats! Sparky also worked for the Blue Island Park District, Blue Island Public Works and Witte Chevrolet. He was a gifted mechanic and could repair and restore any thing he put his hands on! Sparky spent endless hours in his garage working on automobiles, snow blowers and lawn mowers, just to name a few. He was instrumental in the refurbishing of “Old Bess” spending countless hours with each and every detail of this special fire truck. His time spent in Eagle River was just as busy as his life on The Island! Sparky soon made many new friends there, however many folks from Blue Island also had homes on Eagle River. He began helping out neighbors by repairing and maintaining their homes while always finding something new to enhance his own family home. Sparky found time to work at a Mobile Home Park in the area and added pest control to his list of accomplishments! Sparky enjoyed traveling with his wife, taking many cruises and vacations to Florida. He also could be found on a lake fishing. Visitation for Richard will be held Monday, April 3, 2023 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, at 11:00 am at the Krueger Funeral Home, 13050 S. Greenwood Ave., Blue Island. Cremation will be private.

Allen J. Jaglowski of Chicago, Illinois passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at the age of 71. After several months of declining health, Allen died peacefully with his children and partner by his side. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Joseph and Laura Jaglowski, his maternal grandparents Harry and Stella Kartasuk, his parents Raymond and Virginia Jaglowski, his birth mother Delores Pellegrini and his first grandson Matthew Lewnard. Allen was born in Highwood, IL on September 12, 1951 and was adopted by his parents Raymond and Virginia Jaglowski and raised in Chicago with his younger sister JanAnn Olesky. He was a loving father to Candace (Terence) Lewnard and Kevin (Cassandra) Jaglowski. He was a proud Papa to five grandchildren. Later in life he was able to connect with his birth mother and his half-sister. He was always accompanied by his longtime partner Gloria Gigele. Al grew up on the northwest side of Chicago where he went to St. Constance elementary school, followed by Quigley Preparatory Seminary North for three years, before graduating from Notre Dame Niles high school. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois Chicago Circle and received a Masters degree at Lewis University. He was also very proud that he went to Harvard- even if it was only for a 3-day course! Al’s calling was to be a police officer. He started his 39-year career at the Riverside Police Department, and transferred to the Chicago Police Department after two years. He spent much of his career as a Homicide Detective at Area 4 where he earned multiple accommodations. During his time at the CPD he was an associate professor at Chicago’s Citywide College and taught numerous classes in the Police Academy. He was the longtime president of the Chicago Police Detectives Association and a proud member of FOP Lodge 7 where he served multiple times, including just being reelected as trustee. When Allen wasn’t tracking down bad guys, he liked to spend much of his time in the water. He was a PADI Master Scuba Instructor which led him on countless dive trips around the world enjoying the calm life underwater and completing well over 1000 dives in his life. Through his diving business, Underwater Fantasea Divers, he certified hundreds of people to become divers and learn the beauty of what’s beneath the waves. Later on in life when Allen became ‘Papa’ he turned his focus to being an instructor at the Lattof YMCA where he taught the Infant and Toddler Swim classes for 10 years. He was able to impact hundreds of kids, including each of his own grandchildren, teaching them to swim and love the water. From the time he got his driver's license Allen was known as a car guy. From muscle cars when he was younger, to sporty imports in the 80’s, to becoming a diehard Corvette guy from the 90’s on. He was especially proud when he took delivery of his new Corvette in 2001. Over the years he enjoyed modifying his cars, with the occasional trips to a dragstrip or trackday, and was always up for the stoplight street race with another cool car. Never a guy to say a drive was too long or too far, he put on thousands of miles going on long road trips across the country. He also loved surprising a grandkid for a ride in Papa’s Corvette. Above all else, being a great Papa was a role that Al took the most seriously. He had an active role in each of the grandkids' upbringings by not only teaching them to swim at the Y, but also volunteering for over a decade to spend two days a week providing childcare for each one of them. Known as ‘Papa Days,’ he would take the kids on all kinds of adventures throughout the city, buying them countless amounts of ice cream, treats, souvenirs and T-shirts as mementos. He rarely missed an event for his grandchildren. Whether it was school shows, dance recitals, scouting, church or sporting events, he could always be found supporting them in the cheering section. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his sister JanAnn Olesky, half-sister Lori Pellegrini Kistler, his partner Gloria Gigele, his children Candace (Terence) Lewnard and Kevin (Cassandra) Jaglowski, his former spouse Patricia Jaglowski and his grandchildren Michael and Sofia Lewnard, Camron and Lillian Jaglowski. Visitation on Tuesday, April 4th, 3PM to 8PM, Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N Cicero Ave, Chicago. Marilyn M. Jakaitis (nee Roubik), age 91, formerly of Chicago's south side Mt. Greenwood neighborhood, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Beloved wife of 57 years to the love of her life the late Leo J. Jakaitis, retired CPD. Loving mother of Karen (Ronald) Harms and to the late Michael "Jake" retired CFD (Cathie) Jakaitis. Grandmother to Michael, Katherine, Jessica, Jacob and Joseph. Great-grandmother to Jaxon and Landon. Daughter to the late Matthew and Mae (nee Pavlik) Roubik. Sister to the late Matthew "Mick" retired CPD (late Marilyn) Roubik, late Patricia (late Steve) Crenshaw, late Barbara (late Wilbert) Hechler, late Deanna (late George) Vanko, Carol "Charlotte" Roubik, Emil "Bud" retired CPD (Gale) Roubik and Julie Ann (late Chester "Duke") Kowalski. Aunt of many nieces and nephews. Marilyn's life journey started on the south side of Chicago on Western Ave. in the "Back of the Yards" neighborhood. It was here she met her two best friends, Lorraine and Lucy. Then it was "love at first sight" when she met Leo, and they married at Ft. Campbell, KY on August 18, 1950. She had her two children in West Lawn and then moved on to Mt. Greenwood. When Leo retired, they moved to Ft. Myers, FL for 19 years. Due to Leo's health issues, they moved to Colorado to be near their daughter. After Leo passed, she traveled back to Illinois and Florida to visit relatives and friends. Marilyn loved to read, do crosswords, was an exceptional beautician, and followed in her mother's footsteps a fantastic cook. We would like to thank the staff of The Gardens of St. Elizabeth in Denver, Park Regency Memory Care in Thornton and Denver Hospice for their care, compassion and respect given to our loved one. A private inurnment at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, IL will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
