John F. Willems 2.jpg

John F. Willems I, age 93, of Spring Grove, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 19, 2023. John was born in Chicago on Wednesday, December 31, 1930, to Joseph and Margaret (Nelson) Willems. A resident of West Rogers Park, he attended St. Timothy grade school and Amundsen High School. He joined the Chicago Police Department in 1953, after a stint in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War, observing that "People showed respect for police officers at that time." John worked all of his 33 years as a Chicago policeman, mostly arresting burglars, and mob gambling figures. John never worked homicide, but that did not prevent him from solving the murders of five people and apprehending their killers. When John became a cop, his father, a Chicago firefighter, saw a beaming reflection of himself in his son's blue uniform. John had a remarkable career, earning 27 commendations and credible mentions in assignments ranging from arresting burglars, organized crime figures and patrol duties in the Town Hall District as a member of the vaunted Chicago Police Intelligence Division. John retired as a decorated Chicago Police Sergeant in 1986, commended for his part in ending murder spree. John did not fit the image of a man of retirement. He remained active in the community, serving on the Kildeer Police Commission and the Lake Zurich Fire District. He served those capacities for 27 years. Survived by daughter, Nancy (Donald) Williams; son, Joseph (Cathy) Willems, Sr.; grandchildren, Christina (Ian) Koe, Lenny Foley, Kelley (Christopher) Braley, Caitey (Matt) Wallor, Joseph (Kari) Willems, Jr., John (Leane Snyder) Willems II, Jim Willems; great grandchildren, Ripley Koe, Jade, Carmella Wallor, Joseph III, Nora Willems; and a sister, Margie Jo (Steve) Myers. Preceded in death by his parents and wife Carmella. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Thompson Spring Grove Funeral Home, 8103 Wilmot Road Spring Grove IL. Memorials in John's name to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation at www.cpdmemorial.org would be appreciated by his family.
