The Peer Support Program has been in existence since April 2000 and is part of the Professional Counseling Division (PCD) /Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Peer support members are mostly sworn members of the Chicago Police Department who volunteer their time and support when a Department member (sworn or civilian) or their immediate family member is in need of assistance. The primary objective of the Peer Support Program is stress reduction for department members in the form of immediate emotional first-aid and support. Peer support members assist Department members as they work through the impact of critical incidents by supporting, actively listening and providing resources. Assistance may include, but is not limited to, the death of a family member, friend or peer; as well as relationship, marriage, children and work-related difficulties. All communications between Department members, their families and peer support member are kept in the strictest confidence and protected under Illinois Public Act 100-0911. An updated list of peer support members has been posted on the EAP website, Peer Support tab, which is located on The Wire homepage. These trained Peer Support members are available and willing to be there for you, in your time of need. You are also encouraged to reach out to a Peer Support member on behalf of your fellow co-worker, who may be experiencing difficulty coping. The St. Jude Memorial March will be held on Sunday, May 1st at 0700 hours. This year marks the 90th anniversary of a proud tradition, where we pay respect to the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice. To provide the reverence and decorum that this event deserves, note the following points: Strict uniform compliance is expected. Commanding Officers will ensure they have a unit guidon and conduct uniform inspection prior to step-off. Members who must march with small children will fall in at the back of their respective parade unit. Pets will not be allowed to march in the parade. When approaching the reviewing stand, the command “EYES FORWARD” will be given. ALL UNIT MEMBERS will continue to look forward. Only the Commanding Officer leading the parade unit will render a salute. The order “EYES LEFT” will NOT be given. Step off will be at 0800 hours. A Department IAP and streaming video will be released, providing additional details for the day.

EAP Hours of Operation and After-Hours Service Normal office hours for the Professional Counseling Division/ Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is Mon-Fri, 0900-1700 hours. This is inclusive of after-hours appointments. The EAP staff can be reached at 312-743-0378 or Pax 0578. After normal office hours, a contracted answering service will receive all calls coming into the EAP office from their bell number only. The answering service is not accessible from dialing EAP’s pax number. If you need an EAP staff member to call you back right away, instead of waiting for a return call the next business day during normal office hours, ensure you indicate your preference to the call taker. An on-call EAP clinician, Alcohol & Substance Abuse counselor and Peer Support member is always available 24/7. The answering service will notify the respective on-call EAP personnel of your request for a call back. If you are unable to reach the answering service or you have not received a return phone call in a timely manner from an on-call EAP personnel, department members are encouraged to contact CPIC at (312) 745-6300 or Pax 0100.
