Beloved husband of 46 years to the late Lois McAvoy, nee McCarthy; Loving father of John (Anne), Terrence (fiancée Cheryl), Maribeth (Martin) McNally, Diane (Christopher) Suffield and Molly (Michael) Flynn; Cherished grandpa of the late Sean, Dale (Amber), Kyle (Jordan), Makensie (Chase) and Kelli; Alexis, Tyler (Mallory) and Blake, Erin (fiancé Perry), Daniel (Kaitlyn), Molly (Brian) and Katie; Morgan, Casey, Megan, Michael and Caroline; Dear son of the late John and Margaret McAvoy; Dearest brother of the late Ruth (late Bob) Walker and the late Mary Ellen (late Phillip) Papason; John was an avid Bears and Sox fan.

Robert James Hoffmeister, known to many as Bob, passed away on June 7, 2026, in Fort Myers, Florida, at the age of 83.



Bob was born on April 5, 1943, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and he lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and devotion to the people he loved. He was a proud Army veteran and was honored with the National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter recognition during his service. Those who knew him understood that his sense of duty and quiet strength stayed with him throughout his life.



Following his military service, Bob studied at the Chicago Fire Academy and went on to serve as a fireman for three decades. He achieved the position of Captain in the City of Chicago Fire Department, a role he carried with pride and distinction. He also earned certification as an emergency medicine technician (EMT)-1. His years in the fire service reflected his courage, discipline, and commitment to protecting others.



In addition to his career in public service, Bob was also a hardworking businessman. He proudly owned Don's Auto Rebuilders in Chicago, Illinois, where he built a reputation for honesty, reliability, and perseverance. His work ethic and practical skills were admired by many.



Since his retirement, Bob enjoyed being a ‘snowbird’, splitting his time between the Chicagoland area and the warmer climate of Southwest Florida. He found happiness in the simple pleasures of life, including hunting, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. He valued companionship and conversation, and he was happiest when surrounded by the people who meant the most to him.



He was preceded in death by his brothers William and Douglas. He is survived by his brothers Jack, Don, Tom, and Mark, and his sisters Charlene, Barbara, and Darlene. He also leaves behind his children, Anne Marie Sendaydiego and her husband Wed of Louisville, Kentucky, and his son Dennis Hoffmeister of Houston, Texas. Bob was a proud grandfather to Jet, Jake, Mason, and Hope, who brought him great joy and whose lives were brighter because of his love and presence.



Bob will be remembered as a man of strength, loyalty, and integrity. He was a devoted father, brother, grandfather, veteran, firefighter, and friend. His life was defined by service to others, dedication to family, and an enduring appreciation for the people and moments that made life meaningful. His memory will remain a lasting blessing to all who knew and loved him.
