Lawrence “Larry” T. Ryan, 83, formerly of Glen Ellyn, IL and Fort Myers, FL, died peacefully April 22, 2024 surrounded by family and friends at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his daughter, the late Patricia “Patti” Slatin; his nephew, the late Bob (Debi) Heggeland; and his brothers including the late William “Bill” (Maggie) Ryan. He was a beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend to many. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Carol (nee McConnochie), daughter Barb (Lisa Koma) Spall and son Mike (Chris Houchins) Ryan; grandchildren Hayden (Alyssa) Spall, Parker (Alissa) Spall, Mike (Cassie) Koma and Christine (Mike) Donofrio; great-grandchildren Tyler, Rocco, Josie, Ellie, Tessa, Avery and Poppy; nieces Vicki (Bob) Rolewicz, Sue Heggeland (Michelle Panicola), Eileen (Matt) Quinn and Maureen (Dan) Doty; nephews, John (Sally) Heggeland and Bill (Christine) Ryan, along with numerous friends. He was the 6th of seven sons born to Lillian (nee Dixon) and Matthew K. Ryan in Chicago, IL. Ever the hard worker, Larry started delivering groceries on his bicycle at age 14 to help his family. Unfortunately, he lost his mother when he was 16 and his father when he was 19. He served his country by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He married Carol when he was 19. She too had lost both of her parents by this time. Together, they welcomed three children into their family. Their long marriage is a testament to the power of true love and commitment. Larry honed his gracious hospitality skills as a bartender at United Airlines Red-Carpet Room at O’Hare Airport. In an effort to provide greater security for his growing family’s future, he then joined the Glen Ellyn Police Department as a police officer, was subsequently promoted to Detective and retired after 22 years of service. In addition to his police work, Larry was well respected in the community as the owner of his own successful interior painting and wallpapering business. He was known by his customers as a hard-working, personable, and trust-worthy man. Personal referrals kept him busy for over 30 years. Family and friends have been blessed by his warmth, hospitality, generosity, and photography throughout the years. He was the consummate host. His welcoming phrase was always “What can I get for you?” Always ready with his camera to capture the fun, he was known to take photos and surprise people by giving them framed photos or photo albums. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing bingo, shooting pool and Elvis. His passions included his wife, his family, the Chicago Bears, his favorite vacation spot on Sanibel Island, FL and their home in Fort Myers, FL. Please come share your favorite memories of Larry on Monday, April 29th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 111 S. Cass Avenue, Westmont, IL. Gathering begins at 9:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 am. Luncheon to follow. https://www.petersonfuneralhome.com/obi ... rry-t-ryan,
