John R. “Jack” Bangs, 97, of Chicago, passed away on June 14th, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on April 20, 1929, Jack spent his entire life in the city he loved. His years in Chicago were marked by a hard‑working spirit and a deep sense of duty. A proud retired Chicago Firefighter, Jack served his community with courage and commitment, earning awards for bravery that reflected the strength of his character. He was also a dedicated Chicago Fire Fighters Union member for 70 years, a testament to his loyalty and the lifelong brotherhood he shared with his fellow firefighters. Many of his closest and longest friendships were forged through that service.

Jack found joy in the simple, steady pleasures that shaped his days. He was a devoted fan of the Chicago Bears, loved fishing, enjoyed watching boxing, and cherished every trip he made to visit his daughter in Florida. He also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, who always seemed to sense his gentle nature. Along with all of this, Jack was known for his great sense of humor, the kind that could lighten a room and bring a smile to the people around him.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Robin Nyberg, and her husband, David, as well as his son, Randy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom were touched by his kindness, strength, and warmth. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marietta, who passed away on January 19, 2004.

A memorial service will be arranged at a later date, and the family will share details once plans are finalized.

The family invites those who knew Jack to honor his memory through acts of kindness — a reflection of the generosity, loyalty, humor, and quiet goodness he carried throughout his life.

Eugene J. Obora, age 88, Army Veteran, formerly of Orland Park and Brighton Park. Beloved husband of the late Kathleen "Cookie", nee Wojcik. Loving father of Lenore (Thomas) Tinics and Jason Obora, retired Cook County Police. Devoted grandfather of Rachel Obora and Logan Obora. Cherished son of the late Kazmier and Helena. Devoted brother of Ted (the late Rita) Obora and the late Loretta Obora. Dear uncle of Brian (Karol) Obora, Bruce Obora and Karen (Jim) Kotsiviras.

Interment Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation Sunday, June 21, 3:00pm to 8:00pm.

Eugene was a member of Sheet Metal Union Local #73. He loved fishing, the outdoors and boating, and he played baseball in the Army. Eugene also played baseball while attending Kelly High School, his alma mater.
