Thomas E. Hoffman, a devoted husband, loving father, and one of Chicago’s most respected jurists, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025. Born on December 23, 1947 and raised in Chicago, Tom earned his B.B.A. from Loyola University Chicago and his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School. Prior to his judicial career he served with the Chicago Police Department, was an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago, and was in private practice. Tom was appointed as an associate judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1984 and elected as a circuit judge in 1988. He was assigned to the First District Appellate Court in 1993, elected to that court in 1994, and additionally served on a statewide panel of five appellate judges that review workers’ compensation matters. Tom was known for his sharp legal mind, eloquent writing, and love of the law. He mentored young attorneys, served with integrity and advocated tirelessly for justice. He taught at John Marshall and DePaul University’s law schools, wrote numerous articles and lectured on many legal topics. In 1988 he received the John Marshall Law School’s “Distinguished Alumni” award and was president of the school’s alumni association in 1996. Outside of the courtroom, Tom found joy in life’s quieter passions. He was an avid collector of historical memorabilia and a classic car enthusiast. He loved spending time on his farm and later at his summer home in Michigan, and enjoying good food and music in New Orleans. Above all, he was a family man devoted to his loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife Margarita, his children Thomas, Christopher, Lija and Vincent, and his grandchildren Thomas, Michael, Brittany, Bexley and Boston. His warmth, wit and wisdom left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Tom’s life was one of service, intellect, and love. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. A Celebration of Life memorial reception will take place on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 4 p.m. at the Ridgemoor Country Club, 6601 W. Gunnison St., Harwood Heights, IL., for all who wish to join together in celebrating the life of a man who was loved by so many. Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to The Justice Thomas E. Hoffman Scholarship Fund at The 100 Club of Illinois, 100clubil.org.
