John Rutledge “Rhett” Butler, age 84, of Chicago Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday July 28, 2025, surrounded by his cherished family during his final moments. John was a devoted husband for nearly 58 years of his loving wife Joanne Marie (neé Korenek) Butler and proud father to Jennifer (David Green) and William “Bill”. Preceded in death by his parents, William and Annabelle McLean Butler, and dear cousins John “Bumpy” McCaffrey, Thomas J. “T.J.” (Madelyn) McCaffrey, and Kate McCaffrey. John dedicated his life to helping others. After graduating Mount Carmel high school, he began his journey I n service as a Marine Corps Reservist, before joining the Chicago Police Department in 1966. During his tenure as a police officer, John served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and pursued a degree in criminology, receiving recognition for academic achievement from the University of Illinois. Through most of his career in law enforcement, John was a Police Forensic Investigator, and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1997. Throughout his life, John was ardently devoted to his family and friends, embodying the role of a diligent provider and a guiding role model for his children. He had a generous and deeply caring spirit, loyal and selfless to the countless friends he gathered throughout his life. John had an innate sense of perseverance that allowed him to face adversity in life with stoicism and determination. His quirky and playful sense of humor stood out as one of his most remarkable traits. This joviality and joie de vivre made him an entertaining presence, always bringing amusement to those around him. John loved to travel and possessed an adventurous and youthful spirit, embarking on cross country road trips alongside his wife Joanne, and exploring distant places with his son and daughter. Blessed with the “gift of gab”, John was an extraordinary raconteur, taking great pleasure in regaling friends and strangers alike with tales of his adventures and experiences. John will be remembered as a man who lived his life to the fullest and made a lasting positive impact on all those he came in contact with throughout his life. His absence will be deeply felt by many. Hello everyone,

Hopefully everyone has survived the heat and floods. Hopefully everyone survives the electric bill when it arrives.

The next Tuesday is the 5th of August and the first Tuesday of the month. That means it's time for the Northside Retiree Breakfast at D'Agostino's 7350 W Oakton Niles. Doors open around 0830 and breakfast is around 0900. The cost for breakfast is still $15/person payable to the restaurant. A 3% charge for credit cards.

We will have door prizes and a split the pot raffle. Bank the Blue will be having a $5 raffle for some wonderful prizes.
