Robert Edward “Bob” Datz, 85, of Chicago, IL – beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend – passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Born on December 7, 1939, to the late Ed and Helen (Ziolo) Datz, Bob was raised in Chicago alongside his two sisters, Diane and Carol. He attended the University of Illinois, where he studied chemical engineering, before enlisting in the United States Navy. There, he became a Naval Aviator, stationed primarily in Pensacola, Florida. After completing his military service, Bob followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by joining the Chicago Fire Department, where he served with dedication for 36 years, retiring as Chief. In 1967, Bob married the love of his life, Anne. Together they raised four children and enjoyed 55 years of marriage, until her passing in 2022. Those who knew Bob will remember his unwavering dedication to his family, his bravery, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and lifelong love of learning. Guests in his home were often treated to his witty puns and poems, lively accordion and harmonica playing, and captivating storytelling. Bob is survived by his loving children: Christina (Ryan), Edward (Sarah), Eric (Amy), and Julie (Mike); his 11 adoring grandchildren: Samantha, Natalie, Peter, Andrew, Holly, Oliver, Charlie, Wally, Eddy, Mia, and Cara; his cherished sisters: Diane (Milan) and Carol (John); as well as many dear in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, July 6th, at Smith-Corcoran Chicago Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL 60646, from 10:00AM to 1:00PM, with reflections shared by his four children at 12:00PM. Bernard L. Swiszcz “Bernie”, retired CPD, late of Orland Park, formerly of the East Side, passed away June 29, 2025. Beloved husband of Rosalie “Dolly” and the late Cleon “Cookie”. Loving father to Christine (Joe) Zima, Pamela (Wally) Krowlikowski, late David (Kathy) Swiszcz, and late Daniel (late Linda) Swiszcz. Dearest step-father to Madelyn (Frank) Fuda, Patricia (William) Borst, Tina Carrano, and late Susan Liva. Papa devoted to Randy, Nicole, Matthew, Kyle, Abigail, Alec, Bret and Hannah. Cherished great-grandfather to Brayden, Marley, Ramone Jr. Kanan and Graham. Dear brother to late Robert Swiszcz. He had a passion for dancing and enjoyed playing golf. He was an avid Chicago Bears and White Sox fan. Richard Allen Young was born on January 25, 1964, in Oak Lawn, Illinois. He is the cherished son of Richard and the late Barbara (nee Wolfowicz) Young. He is the loving brother of retired Chicago Police Officer Steven (Elisabet) Young; devoted uncle of Meagan, Victoria (Lucas Brace) and Matthew, and great uncle of Ava. Survived by many dear aunts, uncles, cousins and godchildren. He earned a B.A. in History (cum laude) from Quincy College in Quincy, Illinois, in 1985, and an M.Div. (summa cum laude) from St. Thomas Theological Seminary in Denver, Colorado, in 1995. He received a D.Min. from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois, in 2014. Richard was received into the Franciscan Novitiate in 1989. He professed simple vows in the Franciscan Order in 1990 and solemn vows in 1993. He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1995. He was separated from the Franciscans in 2002 and began a process for incardination into the Archdiocese of Chicago. He was admitted to Augustinian initial formation on December 18, 2009. After seven months of Pre-Novitiate formation, he began his Augustinian Novitiate on August 13, 2010. He professed temporary vows in the Augustinian Order on August 6, 2011. He made his solemn profession of vows on May 16, 2014. As a Franciscan, Father Young ministered as Parochial Vicar of St. John the Baptist and St. Peter Parishes in Roswell, New Mexico (1995-99). As a priest with the Archdiocese of Chicago, he served as Associate Pastor of St. Ita Parish in Chicago (2005-09). During his time in the Augustinian Pre-Novitiate, he taught at St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago (2009-10). Additionally, Father Young was an Adjunct Faculty member in the Religious Studies Department of DePaul University in Chicago (2001-09). Father Young was assigned to St. Rita of Cascia High School Monastery from 2011 to 2013. In addition to teaching and serving in St. Rita’s Campus Ministry Department, he served as Director of Augustinian Mission at the school. In 2013, Father Young was assigned to St. John of Sahagun Friary at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Illinois, where he was a member of the faculty and Campus Ministry Department. In response to an urgent pastoral need at St. Rita Parish in Racine, Wisconsin, he served as Administrator there from January 2015 until June 2016. He returned to St. John of Sahagun Friary at Providence Catholic High School in July 2016, where he served as a teacher, Theology Department Chairperson, and Campus Minister. Father Young had a strong connection to St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Orland Park, where he assisted 2016-2025. Father Young served as Province Liturgical Director from January 2013 through June 2022. He also served as Province Director of Augustinian Mission and Ministry from July 2018 through June 2024. Father Young suffered a severe heart attack and passed away on June 27, 2025, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. He is remembered as an outstanding educator, musician, and priest. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was truly dedicated to those he served. A Visitation for Father Young will be held Tuesday, July 8 from 2:00pm until 7:00pm at St. Francis of Assisi Church; 15050 Wolf Rd, Orland Park, IL 60467. Visitation will continue Wednesday, July 9 from 9:30am until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
