Gerda McHugh, a vibrant and accomplished woman whose life was filled with passion, connection, and movement, passed away on July 6, 2026, in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Born on March 1, 1930, in Bruchsal, Germany, Gerda lived a remarkable 96 years that were defined by her boundless energy and dedication to enriching the lives of others.

Gerda's journey began in Germany, where she pursued her education at nursing school in Heidelberg. Her adventurous spirit brought her to the United States, where she continued to expand her horizons and share her talents. She earned her yoga instructor certification in Chicago, Illinois, which became the foundation for a lifelong career dedicated to health and wellness.

A pioneer in promoting physical fitness and well-being long before it became mainstream, Gerda taught yoga classes throughout the Chicago Park District, suburban areas, and nursing homes. Her expertise and charisma earned her recognition in a local yoga magazine. Beyond yoga, Gerda's teaching extended to ice skating at McFetridge Ice Arena and water exercise classes at Galter LifeCenter as well as numerous other locations across Chicago and Arizona. Her ability to inspire others through movement was unparalleled.

Gerda's zest for life was evident not only in her professional endeavors but also in her personal pursuits. She was an avid dancer who embraced ballroom dancing and belly dancing with enthusiasm. She excelled at ice skating and rollerblading and competed fiercely in the Senior Olympics, where she won countless medals—a testament to her determination and athleticism. Even later in life, she took on new challenges like climbing at her gym at the age of 86.

Human connection was central to Gerda's life. Whether teaching yoga or leading water exercise classes, she formed meaningful relationships with those around her. Her warmth and vivacious personality lit up every room she entered—always ready with a smile or a dance move. Gerda had an affinity for sparkly things that mirrored her radiant spirit.

Gerda's family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her loving children: daughters Carmen (the late Frank), Rosemarie (Donald), April Joy (Denijal); sons Eric (Mary) and Delmar (Andrea). She also leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren: Richard, Jacquelyn, Amanda (Justin), Dillon, Jennifer (Aaron), Nicole, Ryan (Ashlie), Joseph (Brittany), Amanda (Daniel), and Ian; as well as great-grandchildren Caden, Colton, Abriella, Christof, and Noah.

She was predeceased by three beloved spouses: Dieter (1954-1960), Marvin (1963-1988), and Jim (1990-2000). She spent the last ten Years with Ralph. Each chapter of her life brought unique joys and challenges that shaped the remarkable woman she became.

Gerda's memory will live on through the countless lives she touched with her kindness, energy, and passion for life. May those who knew her find comfort in remembering the joy she brought into their lives.
