Virginia Ragland Biles, 91, of Danville, died February 11, 2025, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on November 20, 1933, in Kinston, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Kingsley and Virginia Tull Miller of Danville and the late Samuel H. Ragland of Mullins, South Carolina. She is predeceased by her infant son, her husband George R. Biles, his son Steven Biles, and her sister Dian Miller. Known affectionately as Gigi, she graduated from Danville High School, Centre College, and the University of New Hampshire. Gigi was a long-time teacher at Danville High School where she taught English, speech, journalism, and drama. She was known to her earlier students as Mrs. Graham and later as Mrs. Biles. During her years of teaching, she received grants to study at the University of North Carolina, the University of Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky University, she also studied Thoreau on Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. She received the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award and was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1995. She was a published writer of children’s stories and poems, an actor, and a director. Gigi was a founding member of the West T. Hill Community Theatre and served one term as its president. She was a member of the Garden Club of Danville and past president; the executive board of the Garden Club of Kentucky; past regent of St. Asaph Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution; Kentucky Society Daughters of the American Revolution committee chair, Jamestown Society, National Huguenot Society, Amanda O. Rodes Book Club and past president of the Boyle County Retired Teachers Association. She was a long-time member of First Christian Church where she was an elder emeritus. She enjoyed her grandchildren and playing bridge with her friends. In high school, she was accorded by her classmates the honor of Most Likely to Succeed, but she liked to say her greatest success was not money but the lives of her children and the young people she taught for 32 years. Gigi is survived by her children Virginia “Ginny” (Bill) O'Donnell, Norman “Buck” (Julie) Graham, William “Monty” (Kim) Graham, Bill (Margaret) Biles and Maripat Biles, her grandchildren Virginia “Ginger” O'Donnell (John) Lucas, Eleanor Graham (Mark) Doerman, Will (Molly) Graham, Jack (Sarabeth) Graham, Robert “Rollie” Graham, Trevor (Lucy) Graham, Hunter Baltazar, Gretchen Biles, Hannah Johnson, Ebby Johnson, her great-granddaughter Aurelia “Aurie” Graham; and her sisters Jodi Cox and Beth Kelly. She shared her warmth, wisdom, and enthusiasm with her family, friends, and students, creating cherished memories that will be treasured forever. A visitation and memorial service will be held when the flowers bloom. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the DAR Virginia “Gigi” Biles Scholarship Fund or First Christian Church.

Martin J. Hegarty (Retired CPD) died February 14, 2025, in Burlington, WI. He was 65. Marty is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rose. Born on October 8, 1959, Marty was the oldest son of the late Jim and Mary Hegarty and was one of six children. Marty was a man of faith and throughout his life enjoyed camping and fishing and was always good with geography. Following in his father’s footsteps, Marty joined the Chicago Police Department in 1994, and served the City as a police officer for 20 years. Marty married the love of his life, Rose, in 1990. They spent their decades together creating a welcoming home, spending time with their families — including more than a dozen nieces and nephews — and regularly traveling to the Philippines to spend time with Rose’s family. Marty was fond of Rose’s siblings and their families. He was adored by his mother-in-law, Concordia Daylo, and by his late father-in-law, Vicente Daylo. Together, Marty and Rose were selfless in caring for their nieces and nephews when the need arose. Marty was also generous with his time and financial resources both at home and in the Philippines. Marty took up running, and strengthened relationships with friends, colleagues and family members through the sport — offering encouragement and advice, and spurring those close to him to accomplish their best. Marty ran numerous marathons and road races throughout the years. Marty also had a particular knack and thrill for organizing and carrying out a spectacular July 4 fireworks display. Marty spent much of his retirement years enjoying his and Rose’s home in Wisconsin, traveling the world on cruise ships with Rose, and generously taking his nephews on fishing trips. Marty will be dearly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Rose; siblings Ellen (Dave) Gudjonis, Jim (the late Lori) Hegarty, Marikay (David Weigand CPD) Hegarty, Julie (Bob) Mester, and Kevin (Barb) Hegarty; mother-in-law Concordia Daylo; brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; and countless friends and former colleagues. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Chicago, 7211 W Talcott Ave, Chicago. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 20, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W Lawrence Ave, Norridge. Visitation will also be held on Friday, February 21, from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Chicago (click here to watch livestream). William Dan McCormick, 90, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born at Condell Hospital in Libertyville to William Edwin and Doris (nee Wells). Dan graduated from Libertyville High School in 1952. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Returning to Libertyville, Dan dedicated his life to public service, for 37 years. He served as a Lake County Sheriff's Deputy before joining the Libertyville Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Chief, retiring in 1996. He was a proud graduate of the FBI Academy, Class of 1973. Further demonstrating his commitment to the community, Dan also served 25 years with the Libertyville Fire Department, retiring as paid on-call Assistant Chief in 1990. For 25 years, Dan and his wife, Margie, enjoyed retirement, traveling to Hayward, WI, and the Mesa area in Arizona. Known for his resourcefulness, Dan could fix anything with whatever he had on hand. A true outdoorsman, he cultivated a beautiful garden, kept bees, and loved being surrounded by nature. He was a talented hunter, but his greatest passion was fishing, and passed this along to his children and grandchildren. He especially loved his fishing trips to Canada with family and friends. Driven by empathy, Dan was a friend to everyone, treating each person with respect. He gave generously without asking for much in return and will be deeply missed. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Margie, of 63 years; his five children; 15 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren, Patrick Dan (Jody) McCormick (parents of Ali, Jenna and Brandon), William F. (Nancy) McCormick (parents of Erin (Austin), Jamie (Alex), and Daniel (Carly)), Kelly (Leon) Spangler (parents of Christopher (Casey) and Elizabeth ), Cynthia (Armando) Duenas (parents of Luke, Jack, Mark USMC (Avril), and Gracie), and Nancy (Adam) Adams (parents of Taylor, Nolan (Hailey), and Cooper); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Pat Duncan; and many of the raccoons, skunks, and other wildlife he cared for throughout his life. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 21st, at McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Pl., Libertyville. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, at St. John Lutheran Church, 501 W Park Ave., Libertyville, with visitation from 11-1 prior to the service at 1 PM. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, Libertyville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 501 West Park Ave., Libertyville, IL 60048; Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 24300 W. Grass Lake Rd., Antioch, IL 60002.
